What does a television producer do?

What does a television producer do? And why are there so many producer credits on any one episode? I get asked this all the time, so here goes.

There are many forms of producers covering different aspects of the production process. There are writer/producers. There are producers responsible for all the departments and everything that goes on while filming. And there are executive producers who are usually the boss of all of us. There are also associate producers (who sometimes have the title co-producer or producer) who oversee post production. Post production covers everything needed from the time the “film is in the can” until delivery.

In my experience that included oversight of the editing, visual effects, sound effects, music, ADR, (This is where we rerecord the actors because there is an off-stage noise on the original track or one of the producers wants a different performance of a particular line.) titles, and all specifications required by the network for delivery. There is so much more but that is generally what a television associate producer does.
